Several major operators have reported service interruptions, including c2c, Greater Western Railway, and London Northwestern Railway. These disruptions stem from the physical effects that high temperatures have on railway equipment.
Steel rails can reach temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius even when the ambient air temperature sits at just 30 degrees. This thermal expansion can cause tracks to buckle, while overhead electric wires may sag under the weight of heat-induced stretching. Additionally, lineside fires have become more common during such extreme conditions.
Some train companies have advised passengers to travel only when necessary and to verify their journey status before departure. A number of services have already been cancelled as a precautionary measure against potential infrastructure failures.

Fire authorities have issued warnings about the increasing likelihood of wildfires across the capital and surrounding areas. The combination of dry conditions and soaring temperatures has created an environment where fires can spread rapidly. Residents are being encouraged to avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside areas and public parks until conditions improve.
Climate Change Report Highlights Long-Term Costs
A comprehensive new report from Central London Forward has outlined the substantial financial implications of climate change for the capital. The organization, which represents a partnership of twelve central local authorities, estimates that climate-related impacts could cost London up to 15 billion pounds annually by the year 2050.
The report emphasizes that immediate and coordinated action is required across all levels of government. More frequent and intense heatwaves, combined with increased flooding and drought conditions, threaten both public health and economic stability in the coming decades.
Central London Forward has specifically called on the Greater London Authority to implement measures such as expanding green spaces and developing more effective flood mitigation strategies.
Water Safety Warnings Issued
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has issued urgent safety advice to families following a tragic incident during the recent heatwave. Police reported more than twenty deaths related to water incidents throughout May and June alone.
The warning came after a thirteen-year-old boy drowned in London’s Royal Victoria Dock during the June heatwave. Emergency responders from the Metropolitan Police marine unit, London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance, London Fire Brigade, and the coastguard all attended the scene at Silvertown Way. Despite their efforts, the young boy was pronounced dead at the location.
Extended Heatwave Timeline
According to the Met Office’s latest predictions, daily peak temperatures will remain above the 28-degree Celsius threshold required for an official heatwave classification through early next week. Following this period, temperatures are expected to dip slightly to around 27 degrees Celsius on Tuesday before rising again to 29 degrees on Wednesday.
If these forecasts materialize, London will have experienced a nine-day heatwave. This represents an extension from the previously predicted eight-day duration, with the peak temperature now expected to remain above the threshold for longer than initially anticipated.
Schafernaker indicated that the absolute peak would occur on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures potentially reaching 36 degrees in the capital before gradually declining to approximately 30 degrees over the weekend period.
