2026 Inductees: A Record-Breaking Year for British Artists
This year marks a historic milestone as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame welcomes an unprecedented number of British artists. Among the eight inductees, six are from the UK, including Oasis, Iron Maiden, Sade, Joy Division/New Order, Phil Collins, and Billy Idol. The previous high for British entries in a single year was five, achieved in 2019 with Radiohead, The Cure, Def Leppard, Roxy Music, and The Zombies. Notably, 2021 saw no British inductees at all.
The Hall of Fame’s History and Criteria
Acts become eligible for induction 25 years after their first commercial release. The 2026 honourees were announced during an episode of ABC’s *American Idol*, hosted by Ryan Seacrest and featuring judge Lionel Richie. Richie, himself inducted in 2022 for his solo career, added an unexpected twist to the event, as one of the celebrated acts was Joy Division, the iconic Manchester post-punk band. The remaining members of Joy Division evolved into New Order, and both are being honored together.
Notable Inductees and Their Contributions
New Order, who later achieved massive U.S. success, were signed by Quincy Jones and performed at the Hollywood Bowl. Oasis, hailing from the same city, are being inducted the year following their largest U.S. tour, which sold out two nights at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Liam Gallagher, however, has expressed skepticism about attending the ceremony, quipping in 2017 that he “wasn’t interested in receiving an award from ‘some geriatric in a cowboy hat’.” Noel Gallagher, meanwhile, visited the museum in Cleveland after accepting an invitation, stating: “I know what it is (the Hall of Fame). I know what it entails and it won’t be happening, ok? They showed me all these exhibits of Oasis stuff. It’s a great place, but I don’t be doing it.”
Reactions from the Artists
Sade, fronted by Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, is the first black woman from the UK to be inducted. Her music, including hits like *Your Love is King* and *Smooth Operator*, has found greater success in the U.S., where her 2010 album *Soldier of Love* reached number one and sold half a million copies in its debut week. Iron Maiden, the heavy metal pioneers, are finally inducted after decades of eligibility, following nominations in 2021 and 2023. Their singer, Bruce Dickinson, has voiced criticism of the Hall of Fame, claiming during an Australian tour: “It’s run by a bunch of sanctimonious Americans who wouldn’t know rock’n’roll if it hit them in the face.” He later reiterated his stance in 2023, saying, “I don’t want to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, because we’re not dead yet!”
Other Inductees: A Mix of International Acts
The two non-British acts inducted this year are the late soul legend Luther Vandross and the hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. Billy Idol, whose tracks like *White Wedding* and *Rebel Yell* remain iconic, has also been honored. He previously performed at the ceremony in 2022, singing *No More Tears* for Ozzy Osbourne.
