ToggleMan Accused of Attacking Sam Altman’s Home Faces Attempted Murder Charges
A 20-year-old Texas resident, Daniel Moreno-Gama, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder following an incident where he reportedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at the residence of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in San Francisco. The arraignment for these state-level charges is set for Tuesday afternoon. Concurrently, federal authorities have also brought felony accusations against him, including possession of an unregistered weapon and attempted destruction of property through explosive use.
Federal Allegations Detail Explosive Acts
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Moreno-Gama was found in possession of incendiary tools, such as a jug of kerosene and a lighter, during the incident. Prosecutors claim he ignited a fire at an exterior gate of Altman’s home around 4:00 p.m. local time on Friday before escaping on foot. Later that day, he was accused of attempting to set fire to the San Francisco headquarters of OpenAI, where he reportedly tried to strike the glass doors with a chair.
“Violence cannot be the norm for expressing disagreement, be it with politics or a technology or any other matter,” stated Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “These alleged actions – which damaged property and could well have taken lives – will be aggressively prosecuted.”
Documents Link to AI Opposition
Moreno-Gama allegedly possessed documents critical of artificial intelligence, with one section titled: “Some more words on the matter of our impending extinction.” The materials also claimed, “if I am going to advocate for others to kill and commit crimes, then I must lead by example and show that I am fully sincere in my message.” These documents listed the names and addresses of executives and investors at various AI firms, including OpenAI’s board members.
OpenAI’s Response to the Threat
OpenAI issued a statement emphasizing the importance of democratic discourse in shaping AI development, stating, “we welcome a good faith debate.” However, the company condemned violence, asserting, “there is no place in our democracy for violence against anyone, regardless of the AI lab they work at or side of the debate they belong to.” The firm confirmed the attack occurred at Altman’s home, though local and federal authorities initially withheld details about the specific location and victim.
Context and Aftermath
The FBI conducted a raid in Texas on Monday, as noted by Director Kash Patel, linked to the incident. Earlier in the week, Altman had been featured in a New Yorker profile that questioned his leadership in the AI sector. Following the attack, he referenced the article, stating, “we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally.” Altman later clarified on X that he regretted associating the article with the alleged act after facing criticism online.
OpenAI’s 2022 launch of ChatGPT sparked widespread consumer enthusiasm for AI chatbots, driving significant financial investment into the industry. This has raised concerns among investors and analysts, who now scrutinize the technology’s impact with growing skepticism.
