Counter-Terrorism Police Confirm Ann Widdecombe Death Was a Targeted Attack

Investigation Expands as Motives and Connections Are Examined

Ann Widdecombe killed in targeted attack – Veteran Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe has died following what counter-terrorism officers have described as a “targeted attack.” The investigation into her death has been elevated to counter-terrorism policing, with multiple lines of inquiry currently being pursued to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who leads counter-terrorism policing, confirmed on Tuesday that investigators are examining whether a recent television appearance may have played a role in motivating the killing. Additionally, officers are exploring whether the suspect might have been targeting other prominent figures within the Reform UK party.

Miss Widdecombe, aged 78 and a former Member of the European Parliament, was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, located on Dartmoor in Devon. The discovery was made last Thursday, prompting an immediate and thorough investigation by local authorities.

Arrest and Detention Details

A 28-year-old white British man continues to be held in custody. He is being questioned on suspicion of commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism, alongside separate suspicions relating to murder. Assistant Commissioner Taylor emphasized that while counter-terrorism police have now assumed control of the case following the emergence of new evidence, both the murder investigation and the counter-terrorism inquiry are proceeding simultaneously.

The suspect was arrested from a house in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and footage captured during the arrest shows a man without a shirt being led away by officers. According to CCTV footage reviewed by The Telegraph, a man was seen departing an address connected to the suspect in Rotherham at approximately 7am on Wednesday morning. This location sits roughly 260 miles from Miss Widdecombe’s home, representing about a four-and-a-half-hour journey by car.

Timeline of Events on Wednesday

On the morning of Wednesday, Miss Widdecombe participated in a video-link interview with Mark Dolan for Talk TV, commencing just after 8am. Police believe the fatal attack occurred at approximately 12:30pm on the same day. Later, ITV News released a series of WhatsApp images suggesting that Miss Widdecombe ceased responding to messages from a television producer around the time officers estimate the attack took place.

Official Statements and Investigation Progress

Assistant Commissioner Taylor provided several updates to reporters regarding the ongoing investigation. He stated clearly that this was a targeted attack, though he declined to specify the exact motivation behind it.

It is clear that this was a targeted attack. We are still working to understand the extent of any planning or preparation, and the motivation that sits behind that attack.

The senior officer noted that investigators are aware of some preparation and planning that occurred prior to the attack, though he chose not to elaborate on the details at this stage. He also confirmed that the question of whether a television appearance influenced the killer’s actions remains an active line of inquiry.

The two investigations are running in parallel.

When asked whether police were investigating whether the suspect was targeting other Reform UK figures, Mr Taylor explained that part of their responsibility is to assess any existing threat to other individuals. He emphasized that this would form a line of investigation to ensure appropriate measures are in place to mitigate any potential danger.

Police Response and Public Communication

The head of counter-terrorism policing also addressed criticism regarding Devon and Cornwall Police’s initial assessment that there was no indication of political motivation for the murder of the Reform UK spokeswoman. Alison Hernandez, the police and crime commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, expressed confidence that the force had delivered a substantial and professional response to the incident.

Mr Taylor pushed back against suggestions that police had attempted to influence public opinion, noting that investigations are complex and evolve as new information emerges. Once evidence emerged that warranted counter-terrorism involvement, the decision was made to transfer leadership of the case.

Officers have secured a warrant of further detention, allowing the suspect to be held for questioning for up to seven days under the Terrorism Act. Mr Taylor highlighted that multiple lines of inquiry are being pursued expeditiously, including several digital forensic examinations.

It is important to remember that this is a murder investigation following a brutal attack on a 78-year-old lady in her home.

Political Background and Prevent Scheme

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood informed the House of Commons on Monday that the suspect was not previously known to the Government’s anti-extremism scheme, Prevent. This detail adds another dimension to the investigation as officers work to understand the suspect’s background and potential connections.

Miss Widdecombe’s political career spans several decades. She was first elected as a Conservative MP for Kent in 1987 and later served as an MEP for the Brexit Party. Her long-standing presence in British politics makes her death particularly significant, and the investigation continues to examine all possible angles to determine the full scope of this tragic event.
