Lord Scott presided over the sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday morning, delivering minimum terms of sixteen years for Cole Turley and Jay Stewart, while the unnamed fifteen-year-old received a minimum of fourteen years in detention.

The Attack and Its Aftermath

Kayden Moy was fatally stabbed on May 17 of the previous year after three adolescents coordinated an assault against him. The trio had been members of the Murray Boys group, whereas Kayden and several others belonged to the Himshie group based in East Kilbride. On the day of the incident, the teenagers traveled by train to Irvine after learning through social media platforms that Kayden and his companions were among a substantial gathering of young people at the beach.

Before arriving, the three armed themselves with a lock-back knife and a cosh, concealing the weapons within their clothing and backpack. Once they reached the shoreline, they began throwing stones at bystanders, shouting insults, and displaying their weapons to intimidate others present.

Witness Account of the Fatal Stabbing

During the trial proceedings for Stewart and the fifteen-year-old, Keryn Knox, who was Kayden’s girlfriend and had been accompanying him at the beach, provided a detailed testimony. She explained that Kayden approached the teenagers to confront them about their behavior.

“I went up with him to try and stop him. At that point he had run up the hill and he was just shouting stuff back,” Ms. Knox told the court.

She continued describing how Cole Turley emerged from the side and Kayden spotted a blade. When Kayden attempted to flee, he slipped and fell. As he tried to rise, Cole stabbed him twice in his left lower side.

“His body turned completely white and his limbs were blue and people were crowding round him, trying to put his T-shirt over the wound,” she recounted.

Despite medical professionals’ efforts to save his life, Kayden passed away at Crosshouse Hospital during the early hours of the following morning.

Lord Scott’s Sentencing Remarks

In his sentencing remarks, Lord Scott emphasized that the three teenagers had traveled to Irvine beach with the clear intention of attacking someone from the Himshie group. He noted that their intent was retaliation for a perceived slight against a member of their own group.

“All three of you travelled to Irvine beach armed, and your intent was reprisal for some slight hurt caused to someone associated with your group,” Lord Scott stated.

The judge highlighted that two of the teenagers carried weapons, including the knife used by Cole Turley to stab Kayden. He described Kayden’s death as pointless and unnecessary, noting that any member of the Himshie group could have been the victim, but Kayden was the one who happened to slip and fall.

“After the attack, consistent with the jury’s verdict that you didn’t care whether Kayden lived or died, you appeared to celebrate what you had done,” Lord Scott observed.

The judge further explained that the teenagers attempted to hide their involvement in what he called an appalling crime, which aligned with the evidence showing it was a planned assault.

Father’s Heartfelt Statement

Speaking outside the court following the hearing, Kayden’s father Paul Moy expressed the profound impact his son’s death has had on their family. He emphasized that Kayden had his entire life ahead of him when he was taken away.

“Every birthday, every family gathering, every milestone from now on will be a reminder that he should be here with us,” Paul Moy said.

He described the ongoing grief as a life sentence for their family, stating that the choices made that day had devastated them forever. The father expressed hope that the sentence would send a clear message about the devastating and irreversible consequences of violence.

“One moment of violence has destroyed so many lives, and no family should ever have to endure the pain that we now live with every day,” he added.

While acknowledging that the outcome brought some measure of justice, Paul Moy noted that it did not bring peace to their family.

Crown Office Response

Moira Orr, who leads homicide cases for the Crown Office, commented on the verdict. She stated that all three teenagers made themselves potential murderers the moment they armed themselves with at least one knife. While Cole Turley delivered the fatal blow, prosecutors successfully demonstrated that all three were involved in both planning and executing the crime.

“They are all guilty and all now have been convicted of murder. It is difficult to adequately express the devastation caused by their decision to carry a bladed weapon,” Moira Orr said.

None of the three teenagers displayed any visible reaction as the sentences were announced, according to court observers.
