“I’m so proud of the city of Glasgow who have made these Games possible, without the city of Glasgow the Games could not have happened and they have stepped in to make sure his competition can happen.”

Addressing Concerns About City Readiness

While some observers have voiced worries regarding Glasgow’s current condition, the First Minister remained confident during an appearance on BBC Radio Scotland’s Breakfast programme. He acknowledged that challenges exist within the city, particularly concerning the redevelopment and renovation of George Square. However, he stressed that these projects are progressing well and represent ambitious initiatives undertaken by Glasgow City Council.

The First Minister noted that while the renovation work continues, the Games are now firmly established in Glasgow. He remarked that if the city had not stepped forward, the tournament would not have occurred anywhere globally. This represents a significant achievement for Glasgow, which has demonstrated its capability to deliver major international events.

A Remarkable Organizational Feat

Glasgow ultimately secured the hosting rights after Victoria in Australia withdrew from the tournament due to escalating financial concerns. Consequently, this year’s edition will be somewhat smaller compared to the 2014 Games that were previously held in Glasgow. Nevertheless, Mr Swinney praised the organizers for completing preparations within an exceptional timeframe. He observed that participating nations are displaying genuine excitement and happiness about visiting Glasgow.

The First Minister specifically commended George Black, who serves as chair of the Glasgow 2026 Organising Company. He explained that this organization had merely eighteen months to rescue the Commonwealth Games, and under George Black’s leadership, the team successfully achieved this goal. Collaboration with Glasgow City Council and Commonwealth Games Scotland partners ensured proper organization of the event.

“This organisation had 18 months to save the Commonwealth Games and the team, led by George Black, have done exactly that, working with the city council in Glasgow and with partners in Commonwealth Games Scotland to make sure the Games can be well organised.”

Looking ahead, the First Minister expressed anticipation for what he believes will be an exceptional opening ceremony on Thursday, with the King and Queen in attendance. He described the upcoming event as another celebratory occasion for Glasgow, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a welcoming host for international sporting competitions.
