Jury Weighs Consent in Micheal Ward’s Rape Trial

In her closing arguments, prosecutor Tracy Ayling KC presented the prosecution’s position to the jury. She emphasized that the woman’s account in 2023 should be accepted as truthful and urged jurors to avoid preconceived notions or stereotypes when reaching their verdict.

Ayling KC characterized Ward’s physical interaction with the woman as both aggressive and risky. She questioned whether the actor considered the woman’s feelings or focused solely on his own gratification. According to the prosecution, Ward sought quick intimacy with a woman he found attractive that evening.
The prosecutor noted that while the woman acknowledged the initial encounter in the first car was consensual, she maintained that subsequent events constituted assault. Ayling KC posed a rhetorical question to the jury: if no rape had occurred, would the woman not have something to be proud of rather than claiming victimhood?
Defence Arguments
Defence counsel Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC challenged the credibility of the accuser, pointing out inconsistencies in her statements. She argued that the woman had been unreliable and had provided false information both to police and to the jury.
“The woman has bluntly not been consistent and has told a series of lies that go to the heart of this matter. She has told them to the police and she has told them to you.”
Bennett-Jenkins KC highlighted that it took eighteen months for the woman to report that she had deleted portions of her text messages with Ward. This revelation emerged while her friends were being requested to provide screenshots of their own conversations with the actor.
The defence counsel also noted that despite the woman’s claim of having blood on her clothing, forensic tests revealed nothing. Furthermore, she observed that the woman had been inconsistent regarding whether any flirting had occurred between the pair.
Judge’s Directions and Character Evidence
Judge Rosa Dean provided guidance to the jury, explaining that they must determine whether consent existed and whether Ward held a reasonable belief in that consent. While the prosecution contends that Ward “did not care less,” the defence maintains that all of the woman’s behavior indicated agreement.
Character witnesses, including Ward’s former partner, a talent agent, and a colleague from Top Boy, testified that they know him well and consider him honest and trustworthy. These individuals described their understanding of his character at a detailed level.
Following the alleged incidents, the woman walked to a friend’s vehicle while Ward sent her messages containing a teary-eyed emoji and a heart emoji. She responded by encouraging him to enjoy the remainder of his evening, which the defence argued demonstrated he was not determined to impose his will.
Ward’s Professional Achievements
Ward’s career has been marked by significant recognition. He received the Bafta rising star award in 2020 and earned nominations for best supporting actor for his performances in the BBC’s Small Axe in 2021 and the 2022 film Empire Of Light. Additionally, he appeared in the American production Eddington alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, which premiered the previous August.
The trial continues as the jury considers all evidence before delivering their verdict on whether Micheal Ward is guilty of the charges against him.
