Henderson Undergoes Successful Surgery Following World Cup Wrist Injury

Jordan Henderson gives update from hospital – England midfielder Jordan Henderson has completed surgery to address the unusual injury he sustained while representing his national team at the World Cup. The Brentford player experienced the mishap during England’s thrilling 3-2 victory against co-hosts Mexico in the last-16 stage of the tournament.

The incident occurred at the Estadio Azteca, where Henderson was serving as an unused substitute. Despite not taking to the pitch, the 36-year-old was among those who received a yellow card during the disorderly conclusion to the match. While celebrating with supporters, Henderson attempted to vault back over an advertising board but lost his footing and fell awkwardly onto his left arm.

Medical personnel responded immediately to the situation. Henderson received oxygen and on-field treatment before being carried away on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. It soon became clear that the injury required surgical intervention, effectively ending his participation in the remainder of the competition.

Recovery Process in Mexico

Following the initial assessment, Henderson chose to remain in Mexico City alongside one of England’s medical professionals rather than departing with the main squad. The team had been preparing for their next fixture at their training facility in Kansas City. After a brief stay in the capital, Henderson traveled back to Kansas City where he underwent a successful procedure on his fractured left forearm.

The surgery was performed at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, where Henderson received care from a dedicated team of specialists. He took to social media to express his gratitude following the operation.

Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday.

Accompanying his message was an image showing Henderson giving a thumbs-up gesture from his hospital bed. He specifically acknowledged the medical professionals who treated him, naming the three surgeons involved in his operation.

Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation: Dr Kenneth P Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston and Dr Kirk McCullough.

Tournament Implications

Henderson’s absence represents a significant loss for England, particularly given his extensive experience. The veteran midfielder has become the first player in history to appear at seven major international tournaments for England. Manager Thomas Tuchel places enormous value on Henderson’s leadership and decades of experience at the highest level.

Despite being unavailable for selection, Henderson will remain with the squad in North America as they prepare for their quarter-final encounter against Norway in Miami on Saturday. This marks only Henderson’s second appearance at this World Cup, having been brought on as a late substitute for Elliot Anderson during England’s 2-0 Group L victory over Panama.

FIFA regulations present a complication for England regarding potential replacements. The rules dictate that outfield players can only be substituted due to injury up to 24 hours before the team’s opening match of the tournament. England previously utilized this provision when Trevoh Chalobah replaced Tino Livramento. Following that deadline, only goalkeepers may be brought in to cover injuries or illness.

Henderson’s positive response to the setback has been evident in his social media communications. In his first message since the injury occurred, he reflected on the match with enthusiasm.

A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.

The England camp remains focused on their upcoming quarter-final challenge, with Henderson’s recovery progressing well as the team looks ahead to their next test in Miami.
