Historic West London Venue Proposes Expansion of Squash Facilities
West London s Queen s Club – The Queen’s Club, a celebrated sporting institution in West London known for hosting its prestigious pre-Wimbledon tennis championship, is moving forward with plans to significantly enhance its squash program. The ambitious proposal centers on the construction of two additional courts designed to meet diverse competitive needs. Currently, the establishment operates three singles squash courts, though official planning documentation notes that these facilities suffer from inadequate viewing arrangements for spectators. The upcoming development aims to address this limitation while expanding the range of available playing options.
Design and Purpose of New Courts
The proposed expansion includes two distinct court configurations. One will be specifically tailored for doubles matches, accommodating the spatial requirements of four-player competitions. The second court will serve as a dedicated space for exhibition singles games, providing flexibility for special events and demonstrations. According to documents submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham Council, the new courts will occupy the ground floor of a planned extension situated in the southwest corner of the property, adjacent to Field Road. The design incorporates tiered seating arrangements alongside a dedicated viewing gallery, directly addressing the previously identified shortcomings in spectator facilities.
Broader Development Plans
Beyond the squash courts, the comprehensive redevelopment scheme encompasses several additional components. Fifteen new pram-stores will be constructed to accommodate families attending events. Additionally, the site will house a Housing Office for Hammersmith and Fulham Council, strengthening the venue’s connection to local governance and community services. The project necessitates the removal of several abandoned structures currently occupying the development area. Furthermore, part of Mary MacArthur House—a five-story residential building originally constructed by the council in 1939—will undergo significant redevelopment as part of the overall transformation.
Relocation of Existing Facilities
The expansion requires strategic reorganization of current amenities within the building. As noted in official documentation, the proposed squash courts will displace the existing Fitness Studio, which currently operates on the first floor. In response, a new Fitness Studio will be established on the second floor, positioned directly above the squash courts in the location previously occupied by the Billiards Room. The billiards table itself will be relocated to the Games Room to maintain availability for members. The Club emphasized that this application will enable it “to offer and promote improved squash facilities to professional, members and guests.” They further described the initiative as “A collaboration project between the Queen’s Club and LBHF, this proposal will enhance the Queen’s Club, Mary MacArthur House and its surroundings.”

The Queen’s Club boasts an impressive heritage dating back to the late 1880s. Its official website characterizes the venue as “the first multipurpose sports complex ever to be built, anywhere in the world,” underscoring its pioneering role in sports facility design.
