Jones articulated a desire for the group to achieve a particular sonic identity—one that captures the intimate, energetic atmosphere of live pub performances while maintaining the capacity to fill larger venues.

A Return to Roots with Ambitious Goals

The recording process is currently underway, with the band members immersing themselves in the studio environment. Jones reflected on their recent conversations about capturing authentic performance energy, noting that they had playfully described themselves as a “glorified pub band” during their discussions.

We’re in the studio at the minute, and it’s funny because we were just talking about capturing the energy of (performing in a pub), we called ourselves the other day a glorified pub band, that’s what we want to sound like.

This dual ambition—to maintain authenticity while achieving commercial scale—represents a central theme in the band’s current creative direction. The goal is to produce music that feels genuine and accessible, yet possesses the power to resonate with audiences in massive settings.

Oasis Influence and Punk Philosophy

The new material draws inspiration from multiple sources, with the recently reunited Oasis band featuring prominently in Jones’s creative thinking. He praised the legendary group’s catalog, describing their songs as some of the greatest sing-along anthems ever composed. This connection runs deeper than mere admiration; Jones noted that fans universally feel they could step into Oasis’s shoes, a sentiment he finds particularly meaningful.

We (the public) all feel like we could probably be in Oasis, and I love that, that’s what’s great.

This punk ethos extends to the band’s approach to their own music. Jones contrasted the accessibility of punk with the more intimidating nature of vocal virtuosity, noting that while not everyone can match the technical prowess of singers like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, the punk spirit democratizes musical expression.

Band Dynamics and Creative Fulfillment

A significant focus for McFly has been ensuring that the new album satisfies all four members equally. Jones acknowledged that in previous years, the band may have prioritized the creative needs of one or two individuals over the others. Their recent work on albums including “Radio:Active” and “Power To Play” has helped them rediscover this balance.

So what we’ve been trying to create, actually, we’ve been trying to find ourselves as a band recently, like what will fulfil all four of us, not just one or two of us.

Because over the years, I feel like maybe we’ve tried to fulfil one of us more than the others, and what we discovered on our last album, there’s been a couple of albums, (Radio:Active) and Power To Play. And when we play those songs, we look at each other and we’re laughing and we’re thinking this is badass, this is awesome.

The band members reportedly experience genuine joy when performing these newer tracks, contrasting with some of their other material which Jones described as more challenging due to its poppier sensibilities or heavier production values.

A Legacy of Success

McFly has maintained a substantial presence in British music since their formation in 2003. The quartet, which includes Tom Fletcher on vocals and guitar, Dougie Poynter on bass, and Harry Judd on drums, has accumulated an impressive portfolio of achievements. Their discography features 19 singles that reached the UK top 10, including seven chart-topping hits. Additionally, they have produced seven albums that entered the top 10, with “Room On The 3rd Floor” and “Wonderland” both achieving number one status.
