Disruption Expected as Six-Day Doctors’ Strike Begins
Beginning at 07:00 BST on Tuesday, resident doctors across England are initiating a six-day walkout, marking their 15th protest in a prolonged pay dispute. This action is anticipated to create notable impact on service operations, as these doctors—previously termed junior doctors—constitute almost half of the NHS workforce. To mitigate the effects, senior medical professionals are being temporarily assigned to handle emergency cases, though some planned treatments and consultations may need to be postponed.
The British Medical Association (BMA) has announced the strike following the collapse of negotiations with the government last month. NHS officials are urging patients to prioritize emergency care by using 999 and 111 as usual, while advising that non-urgent appointments should proceed unless otherwise notified. General practice services, however, are reportedly less affected by the disruption.
“I’m very worried, because my grandfather actually had a very serious stroke. I hope I don’t have a full stroke before I am seen,” said Adrian Emery, 55, from Nottinghamshire. His scheduled telephone appointment to review medication and consult a specialist was initially moved to mid-June but has now been canceled, leaving him uncertain about when he will receive care.
Despite a 33% overall pay increase over the past four years, the BMA asserts that real-term pay has dropped by a fifth compared to 2008 when adjusted for inflation. Dr. Jack Fletcher, chair of the BMA’s resident doctor committee, expressed regret over the strike’s impact on patients, calling it “wholly avoidable” if the government had shown willingness to negotiate. He emphasized that the pay cuts, combined with projected future inflation due to the Iran conflict, justify the demand for higher wages.
The Department of Health and Social Care has defended its offer to the BMA, describing it as “generous” and stating the government is focused on minimizing service disruption. However, the BMA argues that the deal falls short, particularly after the last-minute reduction of measures such as expanded speciality training roles. Originally planned to be created this summer, 1,000 such posts were withdrawn following the strike announcement.
Recent polling from YouGov indicates 53% of the public oppose the strike, while 38% support it. The government had proposed a package of financial measures last month, including covering out-of-pocket expenses like exam fees and accelerating pay progression through five salary bands. However, the union claims the offer was diluted at the final stage. Meanwhile, BMA staff themselves are embroiled in a two-day strike over pay, with members of the GMB union—comprising administrative and support roles—demanding better compensation after a 17% pay cut since 2020.
Notably, the government disputes the BMA’s claim about real-term pay cuts, pointing to the RPI inflation measure, which it argues is higher than other indices. While the BMA accepts this metric for student loan interest calculations, it maintains that the pay disparity remains justified.
