Four Teenagers Face Charges Following Fatal Stabbing Incident
Incident Details
Cambridgeshire Police received a call just before 7pm BST on Sunday regarding an attack on a teenager in Riseholme, a neighborhood close to the Ortongate Shopping Centre in Peterborough. The incident involved a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed and later died in hospital. Detectives have indicated the attack was intentional, and the school nearby, St John’s Church School, closed temporarily due to “a serious incident” unfolding near its premises.
Arrests and Charges
A 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man from Peterborough were arrested on murder charges. Two additional teenagers, aged 16 and 17, face accusations of aiding the perpetrator. The 16-year-old girl from March was also detained over the possession of a sharp object. All four suspects are currently held at the police station.
Police Response
“This is a tragic incident that has led to the loss of a young man’s life. We are in regular contact with his family and providing them with updates. Although the death is deeply troubling for the community, we do not consider this a random act, and a substantial police presence will be maintained in the area for the next few days,” said Det Ch Insp Richard Stott of the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit.
Photographs captured a heavy police presence surrounding the Ortongate Shopping Centre on Sunday evening, with a cordoned-off zone near the Riseholme entrance persisting into Monday morning. The shopping centre is still under a large police cordon, which will remain as police intensify their presence in the area for the coming days. Some flowers have been placed near the cordon as a tribute.
School and Community Updates
An email from St John’s Church School, viewed by the BBC, stated that “police are examining an area near the school,” prompting the closure. The school has confirmed it will “keep a close eye on developments” and provide updates on when the campus will reopen. Meanwhile, the shopping centre operates without disruption, though the rear car park remains closed.
