Seven Arrested at RAF Base Protest Over Alleged Support for Banned Group
During a peace demonstration at an RAF base, seven individuals were detained on suspicion of backing the banned Palestine Action group. The arrests occurred on Sunday near the main entrance of Lakenheath airbase, where protesters had gathered to oppose military involvement in the Iran conflict, according to Suffolk Police. The gathering was sparked by media reports indicating a US fighter jet downed in Iran had been stationed at the base earlier in the week.
“Those arrested were held on ‘suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,’ and have been taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry,” said a Suffolk Police representative. “Our duty is to uphold the law impartially, regardless of future changes. When an offence is suspected, appropriate measures will follow.”
The High Court recently declared the proscription of Palestine Action as unlawful, yet permitted the Home Office to challenge the decision. This keeps the group’s designation in place until the appeal concludes. The protests at Lakenheath are part of a six-day encampment that includes a 24-hour vigil, set to conclude on Monday.
Suffolk Police also announced that two individuals faced charges of obstructing traffic after setting up a blockade at the base on Saturday. The Lakenheath Alliance For Peace noted the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the assembled demonstrators.
