ToggleTributes after British teenager dies while visiting Vietnam
Tragic Incident on the Ha Giang Loop
A 19-year-old British woman lost her life during a trip to Vietnam, following a reported road accident. Vietnamese media sources indicate that Orla Wates was participating in the Ha Giang Loop journey in northern Vietnam when she fell off a motorcycle. She was transported to Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, where she passed away on 2 April, with her parents present at her bedside.
Family’s Compassionate Decision
Orla’s mother, Henrietta Wates, shared her daughter’s vibrant character with the news outlet, describing her as “beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit.” She added, “She loved to look good and lived life to the full.” The family opted to donate Orla’s organs to aid other patients, a choice that brought them comfort. “Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort,” Henrietta reflected.
“Orla would have wanted to give opportunity to others,” said Henrietta, expressing gratitude for the hospital’s care.
Support from the FCDO
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office conveyed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam.” They confirmed ongoing contact with local authorities and support for her family during this challenging period.
Legacy in Southeast Asia
Orla had been exploring South East Asia prior to beginning her studies at Durham University, according to Viet Nam News. Her father, Andrew Wates, emphasized her affection for the region, calling it “very important” to their family to contribute back to the country. The hospital noted that her organs were given to “five critically ill Vietnamese patients,” highlighting the altruistic impact of her final act.
“Her family’s decision transcended nationality and race, offering others a chance at life,” remarked a hospital representative.
