Benn’s Departure and Legacy
Hilary Benn’s time in the position has come to an end after serving since 2024, when he was selected by former premier Sir Keir Starmer following Labour’s return to government. His appointment marked a significant milestone, as he became the first Labour representative to hold the Northern Ireland Secretary position in fourteen years, since the party’s defeat in the 2010 general election.
It has been a great privilege to serve as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and to work with the many wonderful people I have met over the last 2 years.
Mr Benn confirmed his departure through a statement posted on the social media platform X, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve. He outlined his hopes for his successor, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability, fostering economic growth and investment, and advancing the Troubles Bill legislation that affects numerous families across the region.
I wish my successor all the very best in working with the Executive to protect stability, continuing to generate growth and investment and in taking forward the Troubles Bill which is so important for so many families.
Tributes Pour In
Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee publicly commended Mr Benn for his dedication to Northern Ireland and the broader relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland. She highlighted his purposeful approach to the role and his genuine desire to improve conditions for all residents of Northern Ireland.
Hilary has brought warmth and a constructive approach to all of his relationships here in Ireland, and indeed in Northern Ireland. I wish Hilary the very best in the future. I look forward to working with his successor in the time ahead.
DUP leader Gavin Robinson also offered praise for Mr Benn, describing him as an honourable individual. While acknowledging certain disagreements regarding the legacy of Northern Ireland’s difficult history, Mr Robinson recognized the considerable time and effort Mr Benn devoted to addressing these matters.
While we have had significant disagreements on a number of important issues, particularly legacy, the Windsor Framework and the need for Government to act more decisively in Northern Ireland’s interests, those differences were always advanced robustly and respectfully.
SDLP leader Claire Hanna similarly expressed appreciation for Mr Benn’s thoughtful engagement with Northern Ireland’s challenges, noting that his willingness to listen distinguished him from some predecessors in the role.
That approach stood in marked contrast to some previous secretaries of state, and I appreciated his willingness to reckon seriously with the challenges facing Northern Ireland.
As Sir Chris Bryant prepares to assume his new responsibilities, the transition represents continuity in Labour’s commitment to Northern Ireland while bringing fresh perspective to the office. The incoming Secretary will work alongside the Executive to navigate ongoing challenges and build upon the foundations established during Mr Benn’s tenure.
