“The promise of our Scottish Labour Party is that we build a better, more equal nation, and we leave it as a legacy for our children. That is a moral purpose. But too often it can become clouded in the day to day of our politics.”

Marra acknowledged that while the party needs to reaffirm its fundamental purpose, it must also demonstrate a willingness to listen and adapt. He pointed out that the current situation extends beyond a single disappointing result, noting that Scottish Labour has experienced six consecutive Holyrood election defeats.

Fagan Brings Local Government Experience

Joe Fagan, who was first elected during the 2026 Scottish elections, brings valuable experience from his previous role as leader of South Lanarkshire Council. He argued that the party should examine both its victories and defeats to identify lessons for the future.

“Scottish Labour needs to learn lessons from where we have won, not just where we have lost,” Fagan explained.

He referenced Andy Burnham’s by-election triumph in Makerfield alongside Labour’s own successes in South Lanarkshire as evidence that the party can regain public confidence when it maintains strong community connections and demonstrates genuine commitment to improving people’s lives.

“The lesson is simple: people will listen to Scottish Labour again when we stop sounding like a party talking to itself and start proving that we are on their side.”

Fagan highlighted his work as a local council leader, where he collaborated across party boundaries to implement free swimming for children under sixteen in South Lanarkshire, reduce living costs, and establish what he described as the country’s best-compensated home care workforce.

Leadership Timeline and Process

Monica Lennon, who unfortunately lost her parliamentary seat during the May election, initiated her leadership campaign last week. She is expected to receive Anas Sarwar’s Glasgow list seat following his decision to step down from the Scottish Parliament and accept a position in the House of Lords as a UK minister.

The formal nomination period will commence on Monday, August 3, and remain open for two weeks. Following this, party members and supporters will cast their votes between August 28 and September 17, with the final result announced on September 19.
