The comprehensive £1.7 billion procurement involves 200-metre trains scheduled for delivery by 2031. A key component of this upgrade includes modifications to the materials utilized within air-conditioning units, ensuring these critical systems function effectively under thermal stress. The enhanced specifications will provide passengers with 20 per cent additional capacity, supporting Eurostar’s planned expansion of direct routes to Geneva and Frankfurt.
Gwendoline Cazenave, the company’s chief executive, explained the rationale behind the decision to upgrade. She noted that while northern European regions including the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, along with France north of Paris, had historically experienced manageable temperatures, recent patterns suggested otherwise. Following the most recent heatwave, leadership opted for the higher specification despite the increased cost implications.
“We are buying trains that will last 30 years, and we thought maybe in the 2060s, even in the UK, the temperatures could reach those levels. It’s more expensive but it will be worth it.”

Over the past month, passengers traveling from London to continental destinations have experienced delays and cancellations attributed to adverse weather conditions. Services operating between Brussels and the French border have notably run at reduced speeds compared to normal operations during the heatwave.
Western Europe has simultaneously recorded its hottest June in historical records. Beyond transportation disruptions, the heatwave has caused significant damage elsewhere. Southern Spain has been devastated by wildfires, resulting in at least 11 fatalities with 19 additional individuals still missing. Water conservation measures have already been implemented outside the capital. Anglian Water announced a hosepipe ban affecting more than five million customers across the East of England.
