Security Alert: Twelve Detained Following Right-Wing Terror Warning at Suffolk Gathering
Twelve arrested after credible right wing – Law enforcement officials in the United Kingdom have detained twelve individuals after an Islamic conference was forced to conclude ahead of schedule. The premature closure followed intelligence suggesting an extreme right-wing group posed a serious danger to attendees at the gathering.
Coordinated Police Response Across Multiple Regions
Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, confirmed that authorities moved swiftly once the potential danger was identified. Arrests were carried out in several locations throughout the nation as part of a coordinated effort to neutralize the threat.
After becoming aware of a potential serious threat towards the Islamic event in Suffolk, we have moved extremely quickly to make a number of arrests in various locations across the country.
Flanagan expressed gratitude to Suffolk Police for their assistance, which prompted officials to declare a major incident on Sunday. She also acknowledged the event organizers and members of the public whose plans were disrupted by the security alert.
I know this news may be concerning to the public and particularly those in the Muslim community, given that we believe the intended target was an Islamic event.
The commander emphasized that security forces would not hesitate to intervene when any potential danger emerged, regardless of who or what might be targeted. Despite the early conclusion, she noted that the gathering concluded without any incidents.
But as we have shown, we will not hesitate to act if there is any potential threat, no matter who or what the potential target may be.
Detailed Breakdown of Arrests and Charges
Among those detained, three men—aged fifty-five, sixty, and eighty-two—were taken into custody in Surrey on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. A forty-eight-year-old woman was separately arrested in east London on charges of assisting an offender.
Eight additional men were held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act. This provision allows police to detain individuals for up to twenty-eight days for terrorism-related investigations. The eight men included two individuals aged twenty-seven and twenty-nine arrested in Surrey, two men both aged forty-two held in Essex, a twenty-seven-year-old man taken into custody in Ipswich, and a thirty-five-year-old man in Greater Manchester.
The final two detainees, aged thirty-one and thirty-three, were held in London on Monday. All arrests were made in connection with the same security threat.
Community Impact and Official Statements
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that police are treating the warning as credible. She acknowledged that the situation would be deeply concerning for British Muslims and called for national unity against hatred.
I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims. We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.
Assistant Chief Constable Alice Scott from Suffolk Constabulary explained that a major incident was declared early Sunday morning. A multi-agency response was convened to ensure the safe departure of approximately fifteen thousand attendees. The major incident status was later withdrawn.
We understand that the arrests and the context behind them may well cause some concern amongst our local communities. To provide some level of reassurance we will have a visible police presence in the area of Shrubland Hall over the coming days.
Ruman Muhith, a local councillor who assisted with event organization, stated that organizers accepted police advice to conclude proceedings without hesitation. He noted that attendees were not informed of the specific threat and were simply told the event was ending early following morning prayers. There was no panic on site, according to Muhith.
Commander Flanagan reminded the public that the UK threat level remains at “severe,” urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The incident serves as a reminder that security forces must maintain constant readiness against all forms of terrorism, whether originating from right-wing or other extremist groups.
