The harrowing incident occurred on July 10 aboard flight FR1879, which was traveling from Thessaloniki in Greece toward Memmingen in Germany. Ljubiša Karović, a 61-year-old Serbian man, was caught in the sudden cabin decompression that followed what appears to have been a mechanical failure involving part of the aircraft’s engine.
The Couple’s Summer Holiday Turns Into a Nightmare
Mr. Karović and his wife were returning home after enjoying a summer vacation when disaster struck. According to reports, a section of the plane’s engine detached mid-flight and collided with the window adjacent to where Ljubiša was seated. The impact created a significant opening in the side of the Boeing 737-800 jet, and the resulting pressure differential began pulling objects—and people—toward the breach.
Fortunately for Ljubiša, he had his seatbelt fastened at the time. While the belt kept him from being completely ejected, half of his body was hanging outside the aircraft as the cabin pressure dropped dramatically. In that critical moment, Mrs. Grković acted without hesitation.
“If We Die, We Die Together”
Speaking to the Serbian news channel Nova, the brave wife recounted the terrifying minutes that followed. She explained that the engine fragment had struck the window right beside her husband’s seat, causing the glass to shatter and the cabin to decompress rapidly.
“The pressure pulled Ljubiša—luckily he was strapped in—but half his body was hanging out of the plane. I reacted immediately and grabbed him by the legs.”
At approximately 20,000 feet altitude, Mrs. Grković clung to her husband for roughly five minutes until the situation stabilized. Her determination was unwavering, as she later shared her thoughts during that agonizing period.
“I thought to myself: ‘If we die, we die together.’ It was terrifying.”
Passengers Step Up in Mid-Air Rescue
The crisis was not faced alone. Mrs. Grković expressed her gratitude to two fellow travelers who rushed to assist her in rescuing her husband during the mid-flight emergency. Their quick thinking and physical strength helped ensure Ljubiša’s safety until the aircraft could make an emergency landing.
The pilot declared an emergency over the public address system, and oxygen masks were subsequently deployed for all passengers. The flight made its way back to Thessaloniki airport, where the couple and other passengers disembarked.
Aftermath and Recovery
Ljubiša Karović was transported to a local hospital following the incident. Medical professionals believe he is experiencing shock and has sustained friction burns from the ordeal. His injuries have also left him temporarily unable to speak, though he is expected to recover fully.
A Ryanair representative provided an official statement regarding the incident, confirming that the aircraft landed safely and that passengers returned to the terminal. The airline arranged for a replacement plane to continue the journey to Memmingen, departing Thessaloniki at 9:53am local time on the following morning.
“One passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground in Thessaloniki. In order to minimise any delay, a replacement aircraft was arranged to bring passengers to Memmingen.”
