The broadcaster took to Instagram on Tuesday evening to reveal the news, accompanying her message with a collection of photographs and video clips capturing moments with her electrician father.

Jo, who is 61 years old, opened up about her loss with characteristic warmth and sincerity. She wrote that Martin had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease the previous year, adding another layer of poignancy to her farewell.

“My lovely Dad died today,” the presenter wrote. “He was the kindest man, who lived solely to make others happy. He was supremely selfless and loved nothing more than caring for others and making people laugh.”

Whiley credited her father with nurturing her lifelong passion for music, a love that ultimately shaped her extensive career in broadcasting. Martin, who worked as an electrician, was known for walking around his building site with a large ghetto blaster, earning him the nickname of the original DJ.

“I have Dad to thank for my love of music – he used to walk around the building site where he worked as an electrician with a huge ghetto blaster – the OG DJ and his passion for music never went away,” she wrote, adding that Martin’s love for Elbow, Coldplay and Dido was “unrivalled”.

A Childhood of Hardship Transformed into Generosity

Martin’s own early years were marked by difficulty. Orphaned at a young age and subsequently raised by a family friend, he also battled tuberculosis during his childhood. Jo described these experiences as contributing to what she called a “sad” childhood for her father.

“Knowing how it felt not to be cared for, he devoted his life to caring for others,” Jo explained, describing how he’d been a particular “force for good” when it came caring for her younger sister Frances. Frances has cri du chat syndrome, a genetic disorder that can cause learning difficulties.

Despite these early challenges, Martin managed to create an environment of love and stability for his family. Jo reflected on how her father’s difficult beginnings had shaped his approach to life and relationships.

“He may have had the saddest childhood but he triumphed by giving me, Frances, and his grandchildren the happiest childhoods anyone could have dreamt of,” she continued. “He was the greatest Dad and he was everybody’s favourite Grandad… We’re going to miss you so very much. You absolute legend.”

Friends and Colleagues Send Their Condolences

Jo’s heartfelt Instagram post quickly garnered responses from numerous followers and well-known friends in the entertainment industry. Her podcast co-host Zoe Ball was among the first to offer her sympathy.

“Darling Jo. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your words and these photos paint such a picture of a wonderful man who loved his family with his whole heart. thinking of you and your mum, Frances and the kids and Steve. Arms around you,” Ball wrote.

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease

Last year, Jo had spoken publicly for the first time about her father’s Parkinson’s diagnosis. She told Woman and Home magazine that the family had been suspecting something was wrong for some time before receiving confirmation.

“We had been suspecting something was going on with my dad for a while, so it was good to get a diagnosis, and now we’re trying to make sense of it all. It’s really early days, and he’s quite confused about it,” she explained at the time.

Jo also reflected on how such health challenges put life into perspective. “Something like that puts everything in perspective and stops you from worrying about rubbish. Everyone will be dealing with those things in real life. That’s the reality of being my age; that you end up having more people to look after and more responsibilities.”

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that causes increasing brain damage over time. Common symptoms include involuntary shaking of body parts, slowed movement, and difficulties with mobility.
