Rescuers search for dozens of Britons among those missing in Nepal after floods

Traveloasisspot.com – More than 150 people have been confirmed dead after a sudden, catastrophic flood tore through the Rasuwa region of Nepal, a narrow corridor of valleys that runs along the country’s northern border with China’s Tibet autonomous region. Rescue teams are combing through mud-choked terrain for dozens of British nationals who remain unaccounted for, while the total number of missing persons has climbed past 400.

The Nepal Police confirmed on Wednesday evening that 157 bodies had been pulled from the debris. The Nepal Tourist Board updated its tally later the same day, raising the missing count from 384 to 403. Of those unaccounted for, 341 are foreign nationals, and 33 of them hold British passports.

A Geological Event, Not an Earthquake

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) traced the disaster to a magnitude 5.2 seismic event recorded near the Nepal–China border at 8:37 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Crucially, the agency determined that no earthquake occurred. What had initially been logged as a magnitude 4.4 tremor was reclassified after additional analysis of nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite imagery pointed to a different mechanism entirely.

The USGS concluded that a glacial collapse triggered a massive debris flow, which then produced “subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream.” In practical terms, a section of glacier or ice-dammed terrain gave way, sending a wall of water, rock, and sediment racing down valley floors at speeds that left residents no time to react.

Footage circulating on social media captured the raw violence of the event: rivers bursting their banks in seconds, thick brown mud engulfing entire neighbourhoods, bridges snapping and being swept into the current, and people scrambling uphill through knee-deep slurry while screaming for help.

Voices from the Affected

Kalpana Malla, a resident of Nuwakot district, described watching her immediate family disappear into the flood in a single instant.

“My family members were swept away by the flood in front of my eyes.”

Her father, mother, sister, and her sister’s children were all taken. She and her son survived by climbing to the rooftop of a house.

“They could not escape the flood, there was no chance at all. This flood took everything, but my son and I climbed the rooftop of a house and survived, but couldn’t explain how.”

Rajan Shrestha, mayor of Bidur municipality, told The Times that the scale of the event was beyond anything in his experience.

“I have never seen such a massive flood in my life.”

He estimated roughly 400 people may have been swept away in his area alone and added that the speed of the water made a full evacuation of the main town impossible.

“And it came so fast. We could not evacuate all the people from the main town.”

Who Is Missing

Sunil Sharma, a spokesman for the Nepal Tourist Board, broke down the missing list by nationality. The largest single group comprises 133 Indian pilgrims who had been travelling to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a site of profound religious significance for Hindus. Forty-seven Americans, 34 Australians, and 24 Canadians are also unaccounted for. By gender, 203 of the missing are male and 200 female.

Among the British nationals listed in travel logs obtained by the Press Association are three men aged 65, 64, and 52, and seven women aged 44, 47, 51, 60, 63, 63, and 65. A 13-year-old girl is also among the missing Britons, alongside two Irish citizens.

A Tour Group Trapped at the Border

Alpine Eco Trek, a Kathmandu-based operator that runs guided expeditions across Nepal, confirmed that four of its Nepalese guides – aged 38, 35, 45, and 29 – are missing. The guides had been leading a nine-day itinerary to Mount Kailash. Kumar Adhikari, the company’s manager, explained that the group was crossing from Nepal into Tibet when the flood struck, trapping them near the border crossing.

Adhikari said he maintained phone contact with his guides until 8:40 a.m., when their devices went offline. At that moment, the group would have been inside Tibet’s immigration office.

“We were hoping that inside it was safe. But later the video came from China’s government which (showed) even Tibet’s side was hit by the flood.”

He described the emotional state of the company’s staff:

“I feel so sad. We are just thinking about what to do next. We are in pain at the moment, deep pain.”

Government Response

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Wednesday that the British Government would do “everything we can” to assist its nationals in Nepal. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued a statement expressing that it was “deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the floods in Nepal,” and urged British travellers in the country to follow local authority guidance and exercise caution.

Why Rasuwa Is So Vulnerable

The Rasuwa corridor sits at the junction of the Himalayan main range and the Tibetan plateau, where steep glacial valleys funnel meltwater and debris flows into narrow settlement strips. Villages and trekking routes in the area have long been exposed to seasonal flooding, but the combination of a glacial collapse event and the monsoon-season saturation of surrounding slopes made Wednesday’s flood unusually lethal. The proximity of the border crossing at Kerung, which links Nepal to Tibet’s Mount Kailash pilgrimage circuit, compounded the danger for international travellers caught between two jurisdictions at the moment the water arrived.
