What’s Driving the Change?

Several categories contributed to this positive shift. Margarine and vegetable fats saw prices fall by 1.9 percent annually, while prepared foods like pizzas and quiches dropped by 6.7 percent over the same period. Meanwhile, essential items continued their gradual climb at a more moderate pace. Whole milk increased by 2.4 percent, compared to the steeper 7.2 percent rise in May. Chocolate prices grew by 4.6 percent, down from 8.3 percent, and eggs rose by 2.9 percent versus the previous 4.3 percent increase.

Liliana Danila, chief economist at The Food and Drink Federation, praised the sector’s ability to maintain price stability despite mounting input costs. She highlighted that manufacturers have worked diligently since Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine to diversify supply chains and build resilience. This proactive approach has helped cushion the industry against external shocks, even as energy costs continue to climb following geopolitical tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Industry players have taken significant steps to protect themselves from volatility. Many food and beverage producers have locked in energy and ingredient prices for up to two years ahead, dating back to the 2022 Ukrainian invasion. This strategy has enabled more predictable cost management and helped prevent sudden price spikes from reaching consumers. However, trade bodies warn that these favorable conditions may not last indefinitely.

James Walton, chief economist at The Institute for Grocery Distribution, acknowledged that the current slowdown would bring relief to financially strained households. Yet he cautioned that challenges remain ahead, projecting that inflation would likely climb again later this year. Three key factors could drive this reversal: escalating Middle Eastern energy prices, increased regulatory burdens, and severe European summer weather patterns. Danila added that the new Prime Minister must prioritize food security, describing disruption as the new normal for the food system.

“Disruption is the new reality for the food system,” Danila stated, urging collaborative efforts between government and industry to ensure adequate investment in technology and workforce development.
