Their remains were located in close proximity to the village of Bédar, situated within the Almería province. Victims Attempted to Escape Through Rugged Terrain
Authorities have revealed that the four British victims were among at least eleven people who lost their lives during the fire, which was reported on Friday. In addition to the British nationals, officials believe that seven other victims were foreign tourists who had been holidaying in the region. These individuals apparently made a desperate attempt to flee on foot after leaving their vehicles behind.
“The decision to take another route instead of the designated evacuation route became a fatal trap,” Mr Sanz explained.
According to the minister, the victims chose to navigate through a dry riverbed in search of safety, rather than following the evacuation path that had been coordinated by emergency services. This alternative route, while seemingly logical, ultimately proved to be a deadly choice as the fire spread rapidly through the area.
Death Toll and Rescue Operations Continue
The official death toll has been adjusted downward from an initial estimate of twelve, though authorities emphasize that the figure remains provisional. Rescue teams are still actively searching through the fire zone to ensure no additional victims have been missed. The comprehensive search operation is expected to continue as conditions allow.
“There are no words for so much pain,” Mr Sanz said as he offered his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
The minister provided further details about the casualties, noting that in addition to the eleven confirmed deaths, four people were seriously injured and eight others sustained less severe injuries. Formal identification procedures for the deceased have not yet been completed, which is why the exact number of British nationals remains under verification.
Government Response and Evacuation Efforts
Mr Sanz reported that 122 people had been successfully evacuated from the affected area, while more than 3,000 hectares of land have been scorched by the flames. The fire continues to burn actively, and officials warn that the situation remains volatile. He described the blaze as moving with exceptional speed, resulting in what he characterized as terrible consequences for the region and its visitors.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her sorrow over the disaster in a statement posted on X. She wrote that she was saddened by the devastating wildfires in Almería and that her thoughts were with everyone affected, including British nationals who may have been caught in the blaze. Cooper confirmed that the UK government is maintaining close contact with Spanish authorities and is prepared to provide support to those impacted by the tragedy.
