Ultra-Processed Food Linked to Quarter of Heart Disease
New Research Reveals Major Health Impact
Traveloasisspot.com – A comprehensive new study has found that ultra-processed food linked to quarter of all heart disease cases and deaths in Canada. Published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Mexico, the research suggests that reducing consumption of these heavily processed items could significantly lower cardiovascular mortality rates.
However, the findings have sparked debate among health experts. Some specialists question whether there is sufficient evidence proving that ultra-processed foods directly increase cardiovascular disease risk. While previous studies have associated these products with poor health outcomes, researchers continue to discuss whether the processing method itself causes harm, or if it is simply the high levels of fat, sugar, and salt that are responsible.
Understanding Ultra-Processed Products
Ultra-processed food encompasses many common items such as ice cream, processed meats, potato crisps, commercial bread, breakfast cereals, biscuits, pre-packaged meals, and soft drinks. These products typically contain additives and ingredients rarely used in home cooking, including preservatives, emulsifiers, and artificial colors and flavors.
In the UK, ultra-processed food accounts for an average of 56% of total calorie consumption, rising to 68% among teenagers. These figures are notably higher than those seen in comparable European countries like France and Italy.
Canadian Study Highlights Disease Burden
The investigation, led by researchers from Canada’s University of Montreal with international partners, analyzed Canadian health records to evaluate cardiovascular disease trends. The study examined conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including heart attacks and strokes, along with related deaths and disability figures.
The results showed that between 23% and 38% of cardiovascular disease cases in 2019 could be linked to ultra-processed food consumption. This equates to roughly 58,200 to 96,000 extra cases, alongside 10,600 to 17,400 deaths, plus disability affecting thousands more people.
Researchers estimated that cutting ultra-processed food intake by 20% to 50% could prevent between 16,800 and 45,900 new cardiovascular cases and avoid 3,100 to 8,300 related deaths.
Expert Views and Recommendations
The study’s authors stated: “These findings reinforce the need for clinical and public health interventions aimed at reducing UPF intake as a key component of cardiovascular disease prevention… To drive meaningful change in dietary patterns, comprehensive structural measures are essential. These include regulations on food taxes, front-of-package labelling, marketing restrictions and reformulation targets aimed at improving food quality.”
Professor Alberto Fiore from Abertay University in Dundee pointed out several limitations in the research approach. He explained that this is a modelling exercise rather than a clinical trial, meaning it does not follow actual outcomes for people eating different amounts of ultra-processed food.
“It takes a 2015 dietary snapshot, applies a risk multiplier borrowed from studies in France, Italy and the US, and projects how many CVD events might be attributable to UPF consumption. The authors’ own sensitivity analysis reduces the headline figure of 96,000 avoidable CVD cases by nearly 40% depending on which risk estimate is used — that is a very wide uncertainty range for a number being put in front of the public.”
Professor Fiore also questioned whether the research truly isolates the effects of industrial processing or simply captures well-known nutritional problems. He noted that the paper itself acknowledges ultra-processed dietary patterns contain excess free sugars, saturated fats, and sodium alongside low fiber. When looking at cardiovascular results by food category, he observed they are “overwhelmingly driven by sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meat products” — items whose negative health impacts have been documented for decades based on nutritional content alone.
