Reports indicate that a seven-year-old boy was among those caught in the dangerous waters. He was successfully rescued and transported to hospital, where he remains in serious condition. Family Members Recount the Heartbreaking Moments

Matiur Rahman, Shally’s brother-in-law, received a phone call from his brother informing him of the disaster. He shared his account with the BBC, describing how the family had been enjoying their time near the water. “They went in Colchester, (to the) seaside and they were near water and playing with them then suddenly a big wave came,” he explained. According to Matiur, approximately ten family members had been present for the day trip.

Mishba Uddin, a family friend residing in Colchester, provided additional details about what transpired. He believed that a young child had encountered difficulties in the water, prompting an older cousin to attempt a rescue. He recounted hearing that “the little one got into trouble then the other one tried to save” the child.

Beach hut owner Beverly Smit, 60, from West Mersea, witnessed the emergency response firsthand. She described seeing rescuers performing resuscitation on the beach while helicopters hovered over nearby fields. Ms Smit spoke with a day tripper who had rented a neighbouring beach hut and attempted to assist. “Two of the children he brought back were not in good condition,” she recalled. She added that swimming conditions were challenging, with the tide coming in and particularly cold water.

Carl Powling, a councillor for Colchester Council, revealed that his daughter was among three teenage waitresses at a local cafe who rushed to help. “Three teenage girls, the waitresses in there, actually came out,” he said. He explained that one girl directed police over the phone while the other two provided first aid on the beach and kept spectators away from filming. He praised the “phenomenal speed” of the emergency response.

Ms Rahman is believed to be the wife of Dr Monsur Rahman, who leads Jubo Dal UK, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Dr Rahman is reportedly the son of Sylhet BNP leader Sheikh Mokhon Mia. Ms Rahman is understood to have worked as a teacher.

“Since yesterday we have been working to establish the circumstances which led up to this incident. At this stage we believe they were trying to help a seven-year-old boy who had got into difficulties. The boy was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition but the woman and teenage girl, sadly, died. All the people involved in this incident are related to each other,” said Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher from Essex Police.

Essex Police issued a formal statement following the deaths. Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher expressed condolences to the families involved and confirmed that all those caught in the incident were related. The East of England Ambulance Service reported that one patient was transported by air to hospital, while three others were taken by road.
