Defence sector equities also experienced notable strength following the appointment of John Healey as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The FTSE 100 index finished the day 61.15 points higher, representing a 0.6% increase, and closed at 10,585.91. Smaller-cap stocks performed even better, with the FTSE 250 advancing 211.69 points or 0.9% to reach 23,752.40. Meanwhile, the AIM all-share index gained 8.24 points, equating to 1.1%, and settled at 766.13.

European Markets and Currency Movements

Continental European exchanges also posted modest gains. Paris’s CAC 40 index rose by 0.3%, while Frankfurt’s DAX 40 climbed 0.7% during Tuesday’s session.

Currency markets saw the British pound weaken slightly against major trading partners. The sterling fell to 1.3375 US dollars in the afternoon session, down from 1.3418 dollars recorded at Monday’s equity close. Against the euro, the pound traded at 1.1720 euros, compared to 1.1755 euros the previous day.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed ministers regarding his administration’s priorities, announcing he would lead what he termed a “cost-of-living Government.” This announcement accompanied a £850 million reduction in taxes on electricity bills.

Mr Burnham used the first meeting of his Cabinet to say that ministers must give people “a sense that help is coming”.

He further committed to demonstrating how policy initiatives would be funded, vowing to always “show how we’re going to pay” for measures supporting economically strained households.

Market analyst Russ Mould from AJ Bell provided context on the political landscape: “Andy Burnham is now confirmed as the nation’s seventh prime minister in 10 years, with John Healey as our ninth Chancellor of the Exchequer in the same time span, and the electorate and financial markets alike now wait to see what policy initiatives may follow.”

Mould added that Burnham’s desire to “plan for the long-term” and serve as a “circuit-breaker after the recent torrid pace of change in Downing Street” would be understood regardless of one’s views on his policies.

Defence Sector Benefits from New Appointments

Defence-related shares experienced upward momentum following Healey’s appointment as Chancellor. Babcock International shares surged 7.6%, while BAE Systems gained 1.8% during Tuesday’s trading.

Healey previously served as defence secretary under Sir Keir Starmer’s administration but departed the role after determining that the defence investment levels announced by the former prime minister were inadequate. Now positioned as Chancellor, he emphasized that fiscal control would remain his “first duty” and described it as the “bedrock of economic stability.”

Addressing Treasury staff for the first time in his new capacity, Healey promised that Labour would establish “a new era of devolution and public control,” pledging to focus on “principles not political buzzwords.”

Geopolitical Tensions and Commodity Markets

International developments also influenced market movements. Iran intensified its regional operations on Tuesday, two weeks after hostilities with the United States resumed. Sirens sounded across Bahrain and Jordan as both nations reported intercepting two waves of missiles and drones.

Iran’s Houthi allies in Yemen simultaneously announced plans to blockade Saudi Arabian ports, potentially exacerbating disruptions to global energy markets following the Islamic republic’s earlier closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude oil prices rose to $91.36 per barrel by Tuesday afternoon, up from $88.07 late Monday. Gold also gained ground, climbing to $4,077.93 per ounce from $4,011.08 at Monday’s close.

UK mining stocks followed this upward trend. Antofagasta finished 5.8% higher, Fresnillo climbed 4.4%, and Endeavour Mining gained 3.8%.

US Markets and Corporate Activity

American equities also closed higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.7%, the S&P 500 index rose 0.8%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.3%.

US Treasury yields expanded slightly. The 10-year Treasury yield widened to 4.63% from 4.59%, while the 30-year Treasury yield stretched to 5.13% from 5.11%.

In corporate news, Segro shares declined 3.4% after the company rejected another takeover proposal from Prologis. Analysts generally viewed the offer as insufficient. Prologis proposed exchanging 0.0890 of a new share for each Segro share, valuing the FTSE 100-listed company at 993 pence per share, or approximately £13.5 billion in total.

Prologis noted that its offer represented a 9.7% premium to Segro’s adjusted net asset value of 905 pence per share as of June 30. However, Prologis criticized Segro’s defensive position, stating that it relied on “unrealistic risk assessments and assumptions to arrive at the various (net asset value) uplifts and earnings projections.”
